Timberland's Wise Receives State Academic Honor

Timberland High School senior Jacob Wise has been selected for the 2013 Missouri Scholars 100, a statewide program that honors 100 of Missouri’s top academic students in the graduating class of 2013. Timberland senior Clarissa Mate received an Honorable Mention.

Missouri Scholars 100 is a program sponsored by the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals. Schools across Missouri are invited to nominate candidates for this state-wide recognition. The selection is based primarily on a formula using the student's grade point average and ACT or SAT score. Each student nominated had to first meet the criteria of an "Academic Decathlon", which included ten events, designed to test the academic strength of the student.

To meet the decathlon requirements, the student must have had a minimum GPA of 3.750, a minimum ACT score of 29 or a minimum SAT score of 1,900, be ranked in the upper ten percent of the class, and have taken upper level courses in mathematics, science, English, and a foreign language. The student must also have excellent attendance, be an exemplary school citizen, and be involved in school activities.

Wise has a 4.34 GPA and scored a 34 on the ACT. He has also scored a perfect 5 on multiple AP tests in calculus, physics and statistics. Wise was named a National Merit Scholarship Finalist this year and has been taking classes at the Missouri Academy, which is housed on the campus of Northwest Missouri State University, for the past two years.

He will graduate in May with both his high school degree from Timberland and an Associate of Science Degree from Northwest. While at Timberland, Wise was inducted into the National Honor Society, tutored in connection with Missouri’s A+ Program, and was a member of both the Math Team and the Scholar Bowl Team. Wise will be honored at a luncheon at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia, MO on April 28, 2013.

Timberland HS Journalists Bring Home Top Honors

The Timberland High School Publications Department brought home multiple awards from this year’s Sponsors of School Publications of Greater St. Louis Conference and Competition. The overall 2011-12 Yearbook was rated excellent and the overall 2012-13 newspaper received an Honorable Mention. This year’s SSP convention featured numerous guest presenters from a variety of media outlets including the St. Louis Post Dispatch, KMOV-TV and School Tube. Workshops gave students the opportunity to move outside the classroom and interact with industry professionals in subjects such as column writing, iPhoneography, embracing multimedia, and increasing editorial leadership skills.

“The conference was beneficial, because it taught me a lot I didn’t know and showed me a new way to think about journalism,” said sophomore Savannah Summerlin. For many, the highlight of the conference was hearing keynote speaker Mary Beth Tinker discuss the Tinker vs. Des Moines Supreme Court case, which dealt with the issue of censorship in schools. “It was awesome listening to someone who recognized a problem with society and stood up for what they believed in,” said senior Madyson Young. “It was very inspiring, listening to her talk about the struggles and setbacks that she overcame and how she is still reaping the benefits of attaining that goal.”

Students from around Missouri and western Illinois also submitted pieces in a variety of categories to be judged. As the panel reviewed the pieces, they also provide written critiques and constructive criticism. Timberland journalists won the following awards:

Local police to target aggressive driving

The O’Fallon Police Department kicked off a new driving safety program designed to address aggressive driving around the City. Focusing on major intersections along Highway K, Officers will be increasing their presence in order to decrease the number of accidents and deaths caused by aggressive driving.

By focusing efforts in concentrated waves, the Department hopes to achieve maximum citizen awareness while highlighting enforcement efforts to combat aggressive behaviors behind the wheel. Countermeasures include education, signage, increased numbers of officers assigned to traffic control, more frequent ticketing of traffic violations and higher fines.

“This is not about catching people as much as it is about raising awareness of the problem,” said Captain Jeffrey Gray. “We all know the drivers who just fly by you in traffic, don't use blinkers, change lanes abruptly, tailgate or run through a red light. We want to make people aware of these dangers.”

Red light and speeding details will consist of enforcement teams of marked and unmarked police vehicles targeting aggressive and unsafe drivers. Aggressive driving behaviors include exceeding the posted speed limit, following other motorists too closely, unsafe lane changes, improper signaling while changing lanes, and failure to obey traffic signals such as stop signs, yield signs and traffic lights.

An educational campaign also will be put into place, and high school programs will be created to inform students of the importance of safe driving habits.

Targeted intersections include Route K and Route N, Route K at Veteran’s Memorial, Route K at Technology Drive, Route K at Mexico Road, Route K and O’Fallon Road, and Route K at Waterford Crossing.

Clean Streams Day upcoming in St. Peters

With the registration deadline approaching, the City of St. Peters is still looking for volunteers to help at the City’s spring Clean Streams Day on Saturday, April 6, 2013. The registration deadline is Tuesday, April 2.

Clean Streams Day is a great project for individuals, families and organizations to help our environment. Trash in our streams harms wildlife, erodes creek banks and increases the chances of flooding during the next big storm. St. Peters’ spring event is part of Mission: Clean Stream, a countywide effort with Greenway Network and Missouri River Relief to clean streams in several communities.

“We’re tackling the issue of storm water quality on many levels in St. Peters,” said Mayor Len Pagano. “One way is to keep our streams clean and free of trash. You can make a big difference in just one morning!”

Clean Streams Day volunteers clean portions of Spencer Creek and tributaries to Dardenne Creek. Register to volunteer online at www.stpetersmo.net/cleanstream, or call 636.279.8207 to request a registration form. Choose between “easy-to-access” creeks and “medium effort” creeks during registration. Advance registration is required.

On Clean Streams Day on April 6, volunteers will check in at the St. Peters Rec-Plex South parking lot behind City Hall at 8 a.m. Rec-Plex South is in the City Centre complex across the creek from the original St. Peters Rec-Plex building. Volunteers will receive trash bags, gloves and safety instructions, as well as enjoy free donuts, juice and water in the morning. Volunteers will be responsible for their own transportation to the creek segments. After cleaning streams, volunteers return to the Rec-Plex South parking lot at 11 a.m. for a free hot dog lunch. Volunteers also will receive a free T-shirt provided by the Missouri Department of Conservation Stream Team.

National Rx Take Back; turn in unused drugs

Don’t let your unused prescription medications get into the wrong hands. Take advantage of the National Rx Take Back Event on April 27, 2013, and bring in those old drugs for safe disposal. The St. Peters Police Department is offering two locations for drop-off during this national event between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 27. Turn in your prescription and over-the-counter drugs during this time only at either the St. Peters Justice Center, 1020 Grand Teton Dr., or at Walgreens, 1305 Jungermann Rd. The Justice Center is located at the corner of Grand Teton Drive and Suemandy Drive near Mid Rivers Mall. Walgreens is that the intersection of Jungermann and McClay Roads.

Your medications will be accepted no questions asked. Police cannot accept any medications before or after the event, so be sure to drop off your drugs between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Agency is coordinating the National Rx Take Back Event. The St. Peters Police Department is participating in the event because unused medication is a potential source of supply for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety. When people drop off their unused medicines during this event, they eliminate the possibility of the drugs harming someone else or getting into the wrong hands.

The service is free and anonymous. You can turn in medications that are out-of-date or medicines that you no longer need or use. Intravenous solutions, injectables and needles will not be accepted. Illegal substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine are not a part of this initiative.

If you’re worried about anonymity, remove identifying information from prescription medicine container labels before disposal. Tightly seal the cap on any liquid product, such as cough syrup.

Independence is 2013 State School of Character

The Character Education Partnership has named Independence Elementary in the Francis Howell School District a Missouri State School of Character.  Independence Elementary is one of fifteen schools in Missouri to receive this designation. State Schools of Character have demonstrated that their focus on character development has had a positive impact on academic achievement, student behavior and school climate.
Emily Allen, Independence Elementary principal, says character education at Independence is a journey that has helped change the culture of the school and receiving this award is a testament of the hard work of the Independence community.
“Receiving this award feels absolutely incredible. I am so proud of all of the hard work by all members of our community. It truly requires buy in and commitment by the entire community,” says Allen.
Nationally, only 45 schools received the State School of Character designation. One-third of those schools come from Missouri, clearly demonstrating the region’s leadership in the area of character education. The State Schools of Character program for Missouri is administered by CHARACTERplus and is generously supported by the St. Louis Rams.
“We are extremely proud of the schools that have achieved this honor,” said Liz Gibbons, director of CHARACTERplus. “The staffs in these schools have created a positive environment in which students feel safe and connected to adults and each other.  These schools are truly able to focus on learning and academic achievement thanks to the cultures they have created.”
State and National Schools of Character are expected to serve as models for other schools, by helping them to achieve the same results. State sponsors will recognize their applicants and winners in state-level awards ceremonies. CEP will announce finalists for the national award by March 1, and national winners in early May.
Recognition as a State School of Character is a step toward being honored as a National School of Character.
The mission of CHARACTERplus is to develop positive character traits in young people by providing a high quality character education process and resources to schools, homes, and communities.  For more information, visit www.characterplus.org.  CHARACTERplus is a program of Cooperating School Districts of Greater St. Louis.
The Francis Howell School District encompasses over 150 square miles in the southeast corner of St. Charles County, and is one of the largest school districts in the State of Missouri, with an enrollment of nearly 18,000 students and approximately 2,200 employees. The Francis Howell Learning Community works everyday to provide the best learning practices for enhancing student achievement.
